The challenge
Convergence happened before the architecture did.
Operational systems were designed for availability and long lifecycles, not for connectivity. Over time they gained remote support, historians, MES integration, cameras, wireless and cloud reporting — often sharing networks and credentials with enterprise IT.
Security work in these environments has to respect that reality. Scanning can disrupt controllers, patching windows are rare and change requires operational agreement. The effective controls are usually visibility, segmentation, access control and monitoring — applied carefully and in stages.
